If you’re in the area and are looking for a way to get some fresh air while enjoying the scenic beauty of Ohio’s capital city, you’re in luck. This is a beautiful and interesting (and sombre, given the history) hike that is well worth doing by experienced bushwalkers who have planned in advance. There are many places to visit in Columbus, Ohio, that make it easy to get back to nature. We left from The Barracks, which is a Qld National Parks site that the Bushwalkers club have access to once a month. The walk starts about 6km from Maiala carpark on Mt Glorious Rd in a place called Lepidozamia Road. About half way in there was an old timber jinker wreck, which was interesting to see Leeches are also present (as I found out), so get ready to pull the slippery little suckers off you when needed. It is a pretty walk through D’Aguilar National Park surrounded by forest and ancient plants, with a steep part toward the end where you decent down a gully to the site of the wreck (the wreck is still intact, but keeps getting smaller as apparently people have taken parts away over time). The wreck hails back to 1977 when a single pilot flew too low on the way back from Bundaberg and crashed on the mountain in bad weather. At the end of the walk is the Piper Comanche Wreck of the title Whilst it is now populated with markers (presumably due to the large number of people who have been lost here in the past) it is still easy to get lost in a few places, so I would recommend going with a group. I did this walk with the Brisbane Bushwalkers Club who knew the walk well. The Cit圜at stops at a pier on the park’s river frontage, and local buses ply nearby Brunswick Street. The park also has barbecues, toilet facilities, and a kiosk for coffee, ice-creams and snacks, though the prices there were bordering on extortionate. There’s some interesting modern sculptures in the park. It’s a shady spot for the youngsters to have fun. Set amongst the giant fig trees there’s an extensive playground for the youngsters, containing swings, rides, a fort and a huge climbing frame. One historical feature of the park is the bandstand rotunda built in 1915. The park also has a very pretty rose garden. There’s shady areas for picnics the jacaranda trees are plentiful but were not in flower at the time of our visit, though the poinciana trees were a blaze of fiery red, and very beautiful. There’s open spaces for sports activities. The park provides for a variety of low-key pleasures and interests. The Brisbane River forms one boundary to the park, and the historic Brisbane Powerhouse complex edges the park to the east. It’s a heritage-listed park, designed by Albert Herbert Foster and created in 1914. New Farm Park is one of Brisbane’s oldest parks. I visited this suburban park for the first time in February 2023, and was quite impressed with how pretty the park was, and the variety of activities it offered visitors.
